Highly Recommmended
I had the good fortune to see the Book of Mormon on Broadway last month and it is everything its reputation claims. It helps if you know the South Park sensibility before going (especially going with your parents, as I did) so that the shock value of their irreverence doesn't overcome the brilliant book and music.
It is easy to see why the Mormons didn't put up a big fuss about the show, given that there is a sneaking admiration for the dedication of Mormon missionaries that peeks through some of the parody and sarcasm about the religion's odder ideas. The scatalogical and heretical ( from the Mormon point of view) aspects allowed a serious message about issues in Africa to be looked at without guilt or sadness, thus ensuring that the audience thinks about them while singing all the songs.
I saw all the original cast, except for Josh Gad, who was off that night. All were in top form, both vocally and in the energy projected from the entire cast. I have already ordered the sound track and I predict that we will see it filmed within the next 5 years. The "Fuck God" song is worth the price of admission alone!
